Income Tax in Pakistan: What Every Filer Must Know

12 August 2025By Abdullah Safeer (LLB, DTL)

Income tax is the annual tax charged on your earnings, and if your income exceeds Rs. 600,000 per year, you must file a return and pay your due tax. A return is your yearly income report submitted to FBR.

A tax return is simply an official document where you declare your total income and calculate how much tax you owe, your yearly income report submitted to FBR (Federal Board of Revenue).

Your income is calculated from 5 heads: salary, business, property, capital gains, and other sources, but from each head, allowed expenses are first deducted to arrive at the net income of that head.

Once all 5 heads are calculated individually after their own deductions, they are added together to get your total taxable income.

After that total, tax credits, special reductions the law allows (like charitable donations or investment in certain schemes), are subtracted from your tax liability, reducing what you finally owe.

The remaining amount after credits is your final tax, calculated using slab rates if you are an individual or AOP. Companies pay at a flat rate, a fixed percentage based on category, with no slab calculation.

Missing your tax return filing means higher withholding tax rates, penalties, and non-filer status, all of which cost you significantly more money. Being a filer protects your finances, strengthens your credibility, and keeps you legally compliant.
